The above painting was made in Ceret, France where Chapiro was in hiding during the Second World War.

Jacques Chapiro started his artistic career at the age of 10. He studied at several Academies of Fine Arts in Russia (amongst others Kharkow, Kiev and Leningrad). In 1921 he established himself in Moscow, where he also worked designing and constructing sets for the Meyerhold Theatre. In 1925 he moved to Paris and as of 1926 he took part in the exhibitions of salons such as Les Independants, Tuileries, Salon d'Automne and the Surindependants. His work can be found in museums in the United States (Chicago), Russia (Moscow) and France (Jeu de Paume, Paris).
