Thilo Maatsch is a self-taught artist and educated as a teacher. From 1925 to 1932 he participated in the Grossen Berliner Kunstausstellung. He was in close touch with the artists of the Bauhaus, particularly Klee, Kandinsky and Moholy-Nagy. In 1927 his first solo exhibition was held in the famous Gallery Der Sturm in Berlin. In 1931 he participated in exhibitions from the Novembergruppe and the Verein Berliner Künstler. Due to the political circumstances in 1934 he was expelled from the German union of artists. As of 1966 he participated in several exhibitions.
